Casteel Coffee Goes Out of Business

The Evanston coffee shop announced that it will host a liquidation sale for items in the store.

Casteel Coffee, the Central Street business that has been in operation since 1995, announced Saturday morning in an email blast that it has closed for business.

Casteel is one of a handful of local businesses that shuttered after the New Year. Tiny Dog CUPCAKE! and Merle's also recently closed up shop.

"We apologize for the short notice and any inconveniences this may cause," read an email from Carol Harris, Casteel's owner. "We took many measures to avoid this alternative, to no avail."

"It is with a heavy heart that we make this difficult decision," Harris added.

The shop will host a liquidation sale at a later date to sell off store items. Harris said in the email that the sale will not include coffee beans.

Casteel was an active member of the Evanston community and routinely donated to local causes and sponsored events such as the 80th Anniversary of Evanston Boy Scout Troop 16, according to its website.

Hate to see Casteel go. Had great choices of Whole Bean Coffees

We used to go there to get tea. But then we were given a Keurig coffee maker as a gift and got into the K-cup madness - very expensive! Fortunately there is an insert filter that allows one to use one's own ground coffee and now we go to Jewel (closer than Casteel) to grind our own.

Good roaster, good business, but they needed to have more of a cafe presence. Without that, I too often forgot that it was there, which is too bad considering I live so close

I was thinking about that today. Off the beaten path. Didn't bother me since I went for coffee beans.

We purchased our whole bean coffee every week from Casteel when they were originally located on Main Street...once they moved to Central Street we didn't go very often, just not convenient anymore...still, sad to see them go though!

Casteel is now the Fourth Business in Evanston that has closed its doors in the past month. One on Central Two downtown Evanston and one on Custer. Bright spot perhaps is new opening on Main with apparent City assistance.

Indeed, it's very sad. I would hope that the owners might consider reopening in downtown Evanston where they would get more foot traffic. (I had to drive over there to buy their Brazilian beans). I also loved the inexpensive kids' toys they sold there, the mugs and ceramics and the great atmosphere. They were one of the only bean roasters in the area. So maybe they will still continue to do that.
