Electric Vehicle Race Stops in Evanston Today

The Electrified Vehicle Race will feature 13 electric vehicles and stop near Dawes Park at 11 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 15, 2013.

Want to check out a variety of electric vehicles in one stop? There’s no need to go to the Chicago Auto Show. Thirteen electric vehicles will be making a stop in Evanston as part of the Electrified Vehicle Rally Friday.

The rally recreates America’s first Motor Vehicle Race with all electric vehicles and will retrace the same route as the original 1895 Chicago Times-Herald motor race, according to a press release.

The electric vehicles will be stopping at the lakefront near Dawes Park on Sheridan Road, between Davis and Church streets, at 11 a.m. on Feb. 15.

While electric vehicles are common on the West coast and in warmer regions, the rally aims to prove that these alternative-fuel vehicles also fare well in colder climates.

The following vehicles will be participating in the Electrified Vehicle Rally:

• Chevrolet Volt
• Fisker Karma
• Ford C-max Energi
• Hyundai Sonata Hybrid
• Nissan Leaf
• Tesla Model F
• Tesla Roadster
• Toyota Prius
• Toyota Prius C
• Toyota Prius PHEV
• Volkswagen Passat TDI
• VIA Motors EREV Silverado
• Smith Electric Delivery Vehicle

why are "stopping" here? where does the race start? where does it end? who are the participants or sponsors? is this an annual event?
