'New York Times' Features Photo of Mother of Slain Evanston Teen
Carolyn Murray, who was a guest at Tuesday's State of the Union Address, is featured on the front page of Wednesday's 'New York Times' holding up a photo of her 19-year-old son, Justin, who was shot and killed last year.
Evanston mom Carolyn Murray stood solemnly holding a photo of her dead teenage son, Justin, during President Obama's State of the Union Address Tuesday. On Wednesday, the New York Times, captured the moment in a front page photo.
Murray was invited to attend the address as the guest of honor of U.S. Rep. Jan Schakowsky. She was one of several victims of gun violence in attendance, including the parents of Hadiya Pendleton, a 15-year-old Chicago girl who was gunned down in a park last month about a mile from President Obama's Kenwood home, as well as Kaitlin Roig, a first-grade teacher who survived the horrific shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, CT.
A few months before her son's death, Murray began organizing a gun buyback program in Evanston as part of her role as co-chair of the West Evanston Strategic Team community group.
