This coming week, the police are hoping you'll throw a party—a block party, that is.

Along with hundreds of local law enforcement groups around the country, the Evanston Police Department will participate in National Night Out on Tuesday, Aug. 7, from 6 to 9 p.m. Sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch, the event is designed to unite police and local residents and send a message that neighborhoods are organized and ready to fight crime.

Evanston police are asking neighborhoods and community groups to organize events for this year's National Night Out. Those could include a block party or cookout, a visit from the police or fire department, a parade or flashlight walk, or sponsorship of an activity for teens that discourages crime and drug use. 

Traditionally, neighbors also turn on their porch lights as a display of unity, according to the police department.
