The Best Advice You Got From Dad

In honor of Father's Day, we asked Patch readers for the best advice they've gotten from their father or a father-figure. Here's what you had to say.

Happy Father's Day, Patch readers!

To mark the day, we asked you earlier this week to share the best advice you received from your dads. From the practical to the profound, here are some of the responses. Thanks to everyone for sharing.

J.Lyn wrote:

My dad shared this wisdom with me...and I have used it time and time again in my life. "Don't listen to what people say...watch what they do...that is where you will find the truth".

Dan Pritzker's dad had a more specific recommendation:

Never to trust the police. If it's harmleas and simple go ahead but anything else shut up and ask for an attorney or get one.

As did John Russillo's dad:

Always double down on 11.

Andrew Spatz shared this about his father, who passed away 20 years ago:

Most of his advice of which there are ACRES, resonate. they make me human, the profound and not so. we are having his 100th b-day party this fall, hopefully he won't complain and not tell too many bad jokes.

And Tea passed on this pearl:

I was raised by a step-father who I dearly love and admire. When I was about 16 -17 years young, I was sneaking cigarettes. My step-father caught me smoking outdoors and instead of giving me grief and a long speech, he said..." a lady should never smoke in public." I know this sounds corny, but it always stuck with me, and before I stopped smoking, I would never smoke in public.

Do you have advice from dad that you want to share? Keep the conversation going in the comments.

My Dad passed away over 20 years ago and he always told me " Just because your a woman doesn't make it easier, you put your pants on the same way as a man so, stand up and be heard, look them straight in the eye and let them know you can play hard ball with the rest of them. A little lipstick wouldn't hurt either." God bless you Dad !

My dad has told me, "Success is the best revenge." This has helped me taper bitterness toward competitive individuals while at the same time causing me to be productive.

"Never draw to an inside straight." was a great piece of advice my dad, Ozzie Osburn, gave me. Bless you Dad, I know that you are up there playing music and making people happy!
