Jews share a common belief about our shared obligation to help and heal our fellow men, women and children. This heritage is at the forefront of this year’s election, as we try to balance our societal obligations with our ability to care for ourselves and live within our collective means. It is not an easy balance. The following candidates in the November 6 election invite you to a discussion group to explore this and other issues of particular relevance to Jewish voters. Please join us from 6:30 to 8:00 pm. on Sunday, October 21, 2012 at Skokie Valley Agudath Jacob Synagogue (SVAJ), 8825 E. Prairie just north of Dempster in Skokie.

What is the SVAG? I know there are lots of republicans and democrats alike, who "support" Isreal, However...I dare say, few people could tell you what that means. Can you shed any light on that? Does the United States need to continue to wage war in the Middle East in order to "support" Isreal? We have young soldiers dying or being dismembered and maimed for life due to our "national" dedication to this cause. I can understand that Jews feel nervous due to WW II, but what do you say to these young men and women who are being killed or dismembered in order to protect a strip of land that could NOT be more embedded in "enemy" territory...just waiting to be a target? What gives here?

June - I am assuming you are talking about our occupation of Afghanistan and the soldiers and civilians being killed, maimed and displaced there. I do not believe that fighting in Afghanistan...or whatever we are doing there...is necessary for the protection or welfare of Israel. It is a pointless, non-winable war which the American people should oppose instead of being comfortable in our complacency. You and I remember the Viet Nam war protests. Why no protest against this wrong-headed war in Afghanistan? Simple: because there is no draft and the "haves" are able to outsource the deaths and injuries to the "have nots!" - Eric
