30 Ticketed For Talking on Cell Phones While Driving During Thanksgiving Crackdown

During last year's "Click it or Ticket" campaign, police issued 20 citations to drivers who were talking on their cell phones.

Evanston police issued 30 citations for distracted driving to drivers talking on their cell phones and 37 seat belt citations over the Thanksgiving holiday week, according to a press release.

The police department conducts enhanced traffic enforcement annually as part of the Illinois Department of Transportation's "Click it or Ticket" program.

The number of citations issued for distracted driving and seat belt violations was significantly higher this year than the number issued during the same program last year. In 2012, police ticketed 20 for talking on a cell phone while driving and 18 people for not wearing a seatbelt.

During this year's campaign, police also arrested four people for operating a vehicle with a suspended license and issued citations for the following offenses:

  • illegal transportation of an open container of alcohol (6)
  • possession of a fictitious ID card (1)
  • excessive speed (7)
  • no proof of valid insurance (2)
  • other minor traffic violations (8)
