Construction Begins Tuesday On Bridge Street

A $2.3 million construction project to rehabilitate the bridge that spans the North Shore Channel begins next week.

Evanston's Bridge Street bridge is getting a $2.3 million makeover, beginning next week.

Gov. Pat Quinn announced earlier in August that the bridge rehabilitation is one of several projects funded around the state of Illinois. Construction work begins on Tuesday, Sept. 3.

The Bridge Street bridge crosses the North Shore Channel, near the bike path by the Ladd Arboretum and the Over the Rainbow Assisted Living Facility. In order to accommodate more pedestrian, wheelchair and bike traffic, the bridge will be widened as part of the project.

Work is expected to be completed in late November 2013, according to the city. Other improvements include reconstructing the pavement between McCormick Boulevard and Brown Avenue, adding new street lighting and upgrading the traffic signal at Bridge Street and McCormick Boulevard.
