Opinion: "The Tower Threatens Evanston Again"

One Evanston resident shares his opinion on a 35-story tower proposed for 708 Church St. downtown.

The developers of a 35-story tower near Fountain Square downtown are asking aldermen for a three-year extension on construction of the planned development at 708 Church St.

Members of the city council were expected to vote on the request at Monday night’s council meeting, but tabled the motion for discussion on Nov. 25.

The tower was very controversial when it was first proposed, in part because it is so tall and also because it would force several downtown businesses to move, including longtime Evanston business Williams Shoes.

Evanston resident Lawrence Weinberg is among those who oppose the plan. He shares his opinion in a blog post on Patch:

"Everyone talks about the highest and best use. For me this place is irreplaceable, and I think it's very good just the way it is. The debate is about this old building or that new building but I have not heard anyone talk about the human services we will retain or lose. That should be part of the calculus.
