Readers React to Shooting of Cardereon Preister

"I am sorry for this young life that was lost and for his children," wrote one reader. "We need to lobby City Hall heavily for change...We need community and police involvement."

Evanston police found 21-year-old Cardereon Preister shot and killed in the 1700 block of Lyons Avenue Tuesday night.

Reacting to the shooting, readers shared their memories of Preister, expressed sympathy for his family and lamented yet another violent death in Evanston. Here's what they had to say:

"My heart breaks today. I was Cardereon's art teacher for many years when he was a kid and I remember his bright smile and light sense of humor. He had his struggles but always tried to do better. I am so sorry he didn't find a better path." -Anne Hoffman

"This kid was not malicious in any way despite any struggles he had. He was recently residing in Skokie, I recall seeing him this past spring and he had a life goal and plans. There is no doubt he could have and would have fulfilled any goals, I hate his life was cut short, it breaks my heart today and I am upset and saddened as a parent." - Local Resident

"I am sorry for this young life that was lost and for his children. As citizens if Evanston, we need to lobby City Hall heavily for change - as we did with the lakefront mansion. We need community and police involvement." - Tim Patton

"My thoughts and prayers are with the family this morning as they mourn the death of their son. Loss of any life is hard, but the loss of a 21 yr old is very sad, 21 yrs old are far to young. Far too young. My prayers also go out to the shooter as well. May God have mercy on your soul." - Blu

"Please don't let this violence spread further in this great suburb of Evanston." - Kev Saiyanknight H (via Facebook)
