Whole Foods May Replace Dominick's On Green Bay Road

The grocery store is reportedly in negotiations to purchase seven Chicago-area Dominick's, including one in Evanston.

Dominick's parent company, Safeway, has said it will exit the Chicago market by 2014. Without a buyer, Evanston Mayor Elizabeth Tisdahl said the city's two Dominick's stores will officially close for good on Dec. 28. The second store is located at 1910 Dempster St.

Some residents have blamed the Dempster Street Dominick's for vacancies at Evanston Plaza, which was recently purchased by developer Bonnie Investment Group. Dominick's lease stipulates that the grocery store has first right of refusal on new tenants--meaning changes could be in store for the plaza depending on what happens to the Dominick's.

Evanston already has two Whole Foods stores, one at 1640 Chicago Ave. downtown, and the other further south at 1111 Chicago Ave.
