Buy An Assault Rifle From the US Government and They Teach You To Shoot It

The Evanston City Council has decided to WASTE its time and OUR tax dollars to solve a problem that doesn't exist. They are considering an assault weapons ban [which is a misnomer since by definition, an assault weapon is an AUTOMATIC weapon which the public hasn't been able to purchase in Illinois since 1934. The City of Chicago's ordinance defines an "assault weapon" as a semi-automatic rifle with a detachable magazine which has one or more of the following features: "folding or telescoping stock, pistol grip, bayonet mount, flash supressor or threaded barrel or grenade launcher". NOTE THAT A GRENADE LAUNCHER IS ABSURD AS IT IS AN NFA DESTRUCTIVE DEVICE..and the other four features are purely cosmetic.

The most common type of rifle that is intended to meet this definition is a modern sporting rifle or generically Colt AR15 [three million of which were sold to the public in the last two years]. It also includes the M1 Carbine....the rifle that most of our grandparents carried during WWII. FURTHER, the Federal Government through what is called the Civilian Marksmanship Program ENCOURAGES CIVILIANS TO LEARN TO SHOOT THE M1 CARBINE, SELLS THEM TO THE PUBLIC AT A DISCOUNT, AND PROMOTES PROGRAMS THROUGHOUT THE UNITED STATES TO ENCOURAGE BOY SCOUTS AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS TO LEARN TO SHOOT THEM.

The Civilian Marksmanship Program also conducts service rifle clinics and competitions where individuals shoot a service rifle [SERVICE RIFLE = AR15..THE SAME RIFLE EVANSTON IS CONSIDERING A BAN ON]. It strikes me as hypocritical and even silly that they are trying to ban a firearm that the Federal government encourages civilians to own and learn to shoot.

Perhaps their attention ought be put on more pressing matters like the crime wave around ETHS
