OCTOBER IS LEARNING DISABILITIES AWARENESS MONTH

October is Learning Disabilities Awareness Month, a time to increase understanding of this common disorder that affects over 4.5 million Americans. According to the National Center for Learning Disabilities, "LD is more than a 'difference' or 'difficulty' with learning — it's a neurological disorder that affects the brain's ability to receive, process, store, and respond to information." Both children and adults can have learning disabilities that affect academic and professional success as well as their personal relationships. It is important to distinguish learning disabilities from other circumstances that may cause a gap in ability and achievement, such as emotional, environmental or economic conditions or other impairments. Learning disability evaluations and remediation services are available through Northwestern University’s not-for-profit Speech, Language, and Learning Clinic on the Evanston campus. For more information, please call 847-491-5012 or visit http://LearningDisabilities.Northwestern.edu.
