The Auxiliary of NorthShore University HealthSystem at Evanston & Glenbrook Hospitals Celebrates Philanthropy at Annual Luncheon

More than 50 members and friends of The Auxiliary of NorthShore University HealthSystem (NorthShore) at Evanston & Glenbrook Hospitals gathered at the Glenview Club on Wednesday, October 9th for the organization’s annual luncheon. Past, current and prospective members had an opportunity to hear from NorthShore President and Chief Executive Officer, Mark R. Neaman, about the organization's impressive history and the incredible impact it has made on the communities served by NorthShore. Mr. Neaman commended the group for its fundraising efforts in the past year, as well as The Auxiliary’s 77 year commitment to philanthropy and community service. To date, the Auxiliary has raised nearly $19 million to support NorthShore research, endowments and projects.

The celebration of philanthropy continued as 2013 Gala Co-chair Teddi Galanis proudly presented a check of $270,000 to Demetrius M. Maraganore, MD, Ruth Cain Ruggles Chair of the Department of Neurology at NorthShore, for “The DodoNA Project: DNA Prediction to Improve Neurological Health.” This visionary research at NorthShore is inspired by ancient Greece, where leaders would visit oracles to obtain predictions of the future. At DodoNA, the oldest oracle, priestesses would interpret the rustling of leaves of a sacred oak tree to determine the correct actions to be taken. Today, the physician-scientists at NorthShore can develop methods to interpret subtle variations in DNA, the “tree of life,” to predict outcomes and determine the correct actions for our patients. Thanks to the continued support of The Auxiliary, NorthShore is able to continue this leading-edge release which aims to predict, prevent and halt neurological disorders such as Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, ALS, brain tumors and multiple sclerosis.
