Five Good Things: Halloween Edition

This week we're presenting a Halloween themed weekend roundup full of festivals for kids, performances for adults, and a combination of costumes and sugary treats for everyone.

Official Trick-or-Treating hours in the city of Evanston are 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 31. If you're eager to give out candy, please have your house lights on during this time. If you're taking kids around the block, the city asks that you please respect houses without lights on.

FAMILY FRIENDLY

Washington School Fall Fest

Rain or Shine, this Saturday Washington Elementary will be all about outdoor fun. Kids can enjoy a bouncy castle, giant slide, haunted house, crafts, games, and, best of all, pony rides. Dress the kids in costume and bring your camera to capture memories of them in action. This is a great way to burn off some of the sugar energy from all the candy they'll be eating this weekend.

October 30, 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
Washington Elementary School
914 Ashland Avenue

Fairy Tale Trail

This weekend the Women's Club of Evanston transforms their clubhouse into eight rooms of mazes, stories, and kid-friendly, non-scary activities for kids up to the age of 8. There are lots of ooey-gooey hands-on activities for kids of all ages as well as activities for special needs kids. This is the Women's Club of Evanston's 20th year of family friendly Halloween goodness. Proceeds go to fund bus scholarships for schools with special needs scholarships.

Westminster Place Old Fashioned Halloween Festival

This Saturday bring your 2-10 year old kids to Westminster Place Presbyterian Homes for an afternoon of safe, indoor trick-or treating, pumpkin carving, carnival games, storytelling, movies, temporary tattoos, and even an outdoor petting zoo. You can bring the kids straight from the Fairy Tale Trail to Westminster Place for an entire day of costumed sugar highs.

PERFORMANCE

Death at the Opera

Admit it, you were expecting Phantom of the Opera. Instead, the North Shore Opera Company is mixing it up with an hour long adaptation of the classic opera Carmen. Don't worry, though – it's full of classic Halloween elements of costumes, death, and surprise.

Ghost Stories on All Hallows Eve

If you're too old for trick-or-treating or are all partied out from Saturday night, nestle into "The Snug" at The Celtic Knot House for a night of scary stories told in front of a roaring fire. You'll hear everything from creepy traditional stories to Edgar Allen Poe to grown up versions of Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. Sure, we all know the roads are safe, but pack the mag light under the seat and prepare to feel like there are fingernails scratching along your spine the whole drive home.

October 31, 8:00 – 10:00 p.m.
