In today’s society we see numerous public service announcements and many more not-for-profit organizations advocating against driving while intoxicated. So, let's be clear, NO ONE ACCIDENTLY GETS BEHIND THE WHEEL OF A CAR AFTER DRINKING OR TAKING DRUGS BE IT ILLEGAL DRUGS OR PRESCRIPTION DRUGS THAT GENERALLY HAVE CLEARLY WRITTEN WARNINGS ABOUT OPERATING MACHINERY OR A VEHILE WHILE USING THEM. A decision to drink or take any drug that may impair your ability to safely operate a vehicle should be immediately followed by a decision on how you will get from point A to point B before impairment sets in. If you chose not to make the responsible decision, drive intoxicated and cause a collision is no accident. At the very least, it is reckless. And when your recklessness causes the death of another human being, we should not excuse that level of recklessness by saying it was a merely a bad decision or a car accident that caused someone’s death. I find it offensive the ex-Dallas Cowboy received 180 days for causing the death of his friend while driving drunk. How does letting people off with a light sentence in drunk driving cases deter others from engaging in the same reckless behavior? Simply put, it doesn’t.
