We asked readers to tell us what they thought were the defining moments of the past year in Evanston, and we received a range of responses.
Asked what events defined Evanston in 2013, readers had a range of reactions. Some cited the low points of the year in our city as guns and violence, while others highlighted positive events like Bike the Ridge, which brought the community together.
Here are a few of the responses:
- "CRIME," wrote commenter Y.
- "Bike the Ridge," wrote Dan. "The idea that families of all different backgrounds come out for one Sunday morning, biking up and down the streets, and enjoying live music."
- "Opening of the Erie Evanston/Skokie Health Center at Dempster & Hartrey to serve countless in our community who have lacked comprehensive health care!" commented Don Zeigler.
- "The failure of the Westside Community to embrace the need to engage with the police and ETHS to extend the safe zone around the high school," wrote Jordan Zoot.
- Commenter ereality had a long response: "Harley Clarke sale and questionable behaviors by certain alderpersons during that process; same city officials giving away valuable lakefront land to NU for a parking garage; same city officials approving rezoning of Colonel Jenny Pritzker's private homes to commercial ones in residential areas and having private meetings with her and accepting donations from her during aldermanic elections. Same city officials turning their backs on all of the continued violence around ETHS (including shooting, deaths of ETHS students and stabbing of an ETHS parent), backing down on approving the proposed Safe Zone, but coming up with no real solutions."
