'Ghostbusters,' 'Frozen' Among Outdoor Films to Be Shown at Northwestern

Two comedies in memory of the late Chicago-born film director, writer and actor Harold Ramis, and a sing-a-long edition of the hit Disney Academy Award-winning animated adventure “Frozen,” are among five blockbuster films that will be screened outdoors at Northwestern University in July.

Two others -- a mid-1950s crime drama starring a young Marlon Brando and an action fantasy featuring the Marvel Comics superhero Thor -- also will be part of Summer Cinema, the weekly Wednesday night series running from July 2 through 30. As an added treat, free popcorn will be available from 8:30 to 10 p.m.

Free and open to the public and presented by Northwestern’s Norris University Center, each

film will be screened at 9 p.m., on the east lawn of Norris Center, 1999 Campus Drive. If it rains, the scheduled film will be shown indoors at Norris Center’s 360-seat McCormick Auditorium on the first floor. For more information, visit www.norris.northwestern.edu/summer/ or call (847) 491-2350.

Moviegoers are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, blankets, food, beverages and an environmentally-friendly insect repellant. Free parking is available after 4 p.m. in the two-level lakeside lot south of Norris.

SUMMER CINEMA 2014 OUTDOOR FILMS

• “Groundhog Day,” July 2, (Harold Ramis, 1993, United States, 101 minutes, video).Bill Murray stars as a TV weatherman/broadcaster who finds himself living the same day over and over again. The film is rated PG.

• ”Ghostbusters,” July 9, (Ivan Reitman, 1984, United States, 105 minutes, video)Three unemployed parapsychology professors set up shop as a unique ghost removal service.  Former North Shore resident Harold Ramis portrays Dr. Egon Spengler. “Ghostbusters” celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. Rated PG.

 • “Frozen – Sing-A-Long,” July 16 (Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee, 2013, 102 minutes, United States, video). Princess Anna, a fearless optimist, teams up with mountain man Kristoff in Everest-like conditions to find her sister Elsa, the Snow Queen. Elsa’s icy powers have trapped the kingdom in eternal winter. Rated PG. Free popsicles will be available for the first 200 moviegoers.

• “On the Waterfront,” July 23 (Elia Kazan, 1954, 108 minutes, United States, video.) An ex-prize fighter (Marlon Brando) turned longshoreman struggles to stand up to his corrupt union bosses in this unrated crime drama. “On the Waterfront” celebrates its 60th anniversary this year. Not MPAA rated.

• “Thor: The Dark World,” July 30 (Alan Taylor, 2013, 112 minutes, United States, video.) When Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) is possessed by a great power, Thor (Chris Hemsworth) must protect her from a new threat of old times, the Dark Elves. Rated PG-13.
