District 65 Teachers Seek Classroom Donations

Through the Donors Choose website, you can help teachers acquire classroom supplies their students would otherwise not be able to have.

It's nearing the first day of school and for teachers, that means readying their classrooms. Many teachers pay for some supplies out-of-pocket, but greater needs require some help from the community.

Two teachers from Evanston-Skokie School District 65 are using a website called Donors Choose to request special supplies for their students.

Nichols Middle School teacher Brad Swidler is requesting $1,668 for three iPads with covers for special education students in his reading/writing intervention class and science and social studies.

"This project is important to me because I was once a struggling reader. I had that one teacher that showed me some different techniques which allowed me to have a love for reading. I too want my students to share the same passion I have for reading. I also want my special needs students to be successful in other classes," wrote Swidler on the Donors Choose.

To date, Swidler's request has had four donors. He is $1,375 shy of his goal.

Oakton Elementary first grade teacher Kimberly Garcia is seeking $592 for non-fiction books and other supplies for a listening center for Spanish-speaking students who are learning English. Her request has generated seven donations. Another $213 and Garcia will reach her goal.

"A listening center is a fabulous way for students to dive into text that may be too difficult for them as readers, but are very capable to listen and comprehend," wrote Garcia in her Donors Choose request.
