Chicagoland's 20 Most Dangerous Intersections

Thankfully, no Evanston intersections are on the list.

The Chicago Sun-Times released a list Monday of the 20 most dangerous intersections in the Chicagoland area, based on the number of crashes in 2010 as reported by the Illinois Department of Transportation.

Thankfully, no Evanston intersection made the list, but a couple of locations within a 10 minute drive were up there, including a Northfield crossroad and a North Side Chicago junction.

In the interest of staying safe, see the list and read the full story here.

What Evanston intersections do you consider the most dangerous?

I would say anywhere along McCormick. Some areas are probably Skokie, but the bike/walking path is in Evanston. A driver is in the middle of turning left (going south) onto Dempster, and a bicycle rider comes tearing off the path. The parking lots in Evanston are worse than the streets. Main Commons and the parking lot with Home Depot, Petsmart, and Aldi. People drive thru the spaces rather than down the lanes. I have had a few near misses in both places.

Ridge and Grove is terrible. Since moving to the area, there have been numerous, numerous accidents there, some involving public transportation. Many happen in the evening when the sun is setting directly west, but others happen during other times, too. Having Roycemore school in the area makes it a little more important to take extra caution in that area. Having emergency vehicles constantly run up and down Grove (to avoid the lights at Lake?) don't help either...

I was shocked that Damen and Fullerton wasn't on the list. Southbound traffic on Damen has a longer light than northbound traffic and there is no left turn arrow, which means every single light, someone is left stranded in the middle of the intersection on red, many with no understanding that oncoming traffic still has a green. I have personally almost been in two accidents at that intersection. I had no idea that the Ridge and Grove intersection was so bad.
