Evanston Billionaire James Pritzker Now Goes By Jennifer

The Evanston billionaire, who recently bid $1.2 million for the city's Harley-Clarke Mansion, will now be identified as a woman.

Evanston billionaire and Hyatt Hotel heir James Pritzker is changing his name to Jennifer Natalya Pritzker and now identifies as a woman, according to a statement released to Patch by a Pritzker spokesperson.

"As of August 16, 2013, J.N. Pritzker will undergo an official legal name change, will now be known as Jennifer Natalya Pritzker," the statement said. "This change will reflect the beliefs of her true identity that she has held privately and will now share publicly. Pritzker now identifies herself as a woman for all business and personal undertakings."

She made the announcement in a memo to employees at the Pritzker Military Library and Tawani Enterprises, as originally reported by Crain's.

Pritzker recently offered $1.2 million for the lakefront Harley Clarke Mansion at 2603 Sheridan Rd. in Evanston, after the city put out a request for proposals on the property. But city council members voted 6-3 in July to reject the bid, in the face of widespread opposition to the prospect of selling public property.

Under her proposal for the Harley-Clarke Mansion, Pritzker’s company, Tawani Enterprises, planned to spend $22 million to restore and renovate the lakefront mansion and transform it into a boutique hotel.

Pritzker did win council approval for two bed and breakfasts further south on the lakefront, at 1622 Forest Place and 300 Church Street.

She also recently donated more than $13,000 to first ward aldermanic candidate Edward Tivador, who lost to incumbent Judy Fiske in November, according to campaign contributions reported to the Illinois State Board of Elections. Pritzker made one donation of $4,000 on Aug. 9, 2013, and another contribution of $9,489.45 the same day through Bropri LLC. According to the Illinois State Secretary’s website, Pritzker is listed as the manager of that LLC.

Tivador has been vocal in his support of Pritzker’s bed and breakfasts, while Fiske opposed both the bed and breakfasts and the sale of the Harley-Clarke Mansion to Pritzker.

Being honest about a trans identity takes so much courage. Congratulations Jennifer!
ereality August 23, 2013 at 06:41 PM
Agreed about courage and openness and honesty related to trans identity. Not so sure I feel the same way about the honesty in openly donating to alderpersons who would be voting on Jennifer's application for zoning relief. Or, also about openness and honesty in Jennifer interviewing and handpicking potential aldermanic "puppets" to try and push their agendas through. And, $13K (+) donation to losing 1st Ward candidate Ed Tivador...SUPPOSEDLY to help him bank roll a potential future run for 1st ward alderperson again? Not so sure about Jennifer's "openness" and "honesty" there (or Ed's or Evanstonnow's take on that matter!!!) Finally, I question the openness and honesty in Jennifer communicating with many of our alderpersons this past year in regards to Harley-Clarke; meetings that apparently were private and not recorded for record....in direct violation of FOIA.

The word has been out for a while on Jame's cross dressing/gender changing which is ok with me. My only issue is the city of Evanston's alderman looking out for his interests over the needs of their wards simply because he's giving them donations.

She really needs to put in a little more effort. She looks like a dude with a gut and ponytail wearing an earring. Okay, a lot more effort.

This is bullish-- and it's not the first time he has has carried on in peculiar manner to add shock value to spice things up. I grew up with this fellow and he was always reclusive.....risked his life in Israel in intelligence working with the Israeli government and U.S. to thwart terrorism, covert operations in the U.S. and earned a high rank in the army. He was hugely different from his family....brilliantly skilled business executives and enlisted. When home in Chicago he was remarkably humble and very much a loner. If he wants to do development in Evanston I say the municipal government should consider his proposals because his family, network and talents lends a meaningful endorsement to Evanston and that is a good thing. A feather in the cap of a town that scum bag criminals are trying to demean. The Evanston police will deal with the lude, assaulting, crooks and small time scum bags as they are very capable......let the skilled citizens and developers do their thing when agreed upon by citizens and politicians alike. I can see some condo development along the shores and less hotels. Evanston is a "new Lennark" or a great town as depicted in youtube video infomercials. If James or Jenny wants to place his or her seal of approval it seals the deal. You know, folks, someone once wrote that Warren Buffett invests like a girl.....if that is the case I think we all should consult with doctors at John Hopkins or just tell Jenny to stop trying to raise eyebrows past our hairlines. Ever see the movie Harrold and Maude?

Colonel Peitzker has a nice 'zing' as a title. Jennifer may change that a bit (and the impression of the Colonel I formed in my mind) - not that its a bad thing though - surprises are fun. I wish the Colonel well. As long as her decision isn't some drug/alcohol driven psychosis - because we all know that when people spin out of control or are left isolated by their extreme wealth - they can sink into a deep and torturous darkness of the mind which then breeds obscure behavior. I know nothing about the Colonel-I hope her decision is made with happiness, confidence, and a healthy perspective. I hope she is surrounded by caring loving people who can provide honest and helpful support . Ps - Evanston needs a woman's touch with its architectural decisions - lots of bad and uninspiring construction going on.

I thought as a billionaire she should "upgrade" her look. Well, it's one of female characteristics to look pretty, right?
Local Resident August 25, 2013 at 05:36 PM
I want to take this conversation a little father and gain more insight. I would never ascribe to discrimination for anyone choice regarding sexuality, but the key world here is characteristic. Those learned patterns of behavior for male and female, how is it transferred or transferable? If the majority of life was spent with the characteristics of behaving male or female how is that so easily denounced? I do not and perhaps never will understand transitions of sexuality or transgender, This guy has been around for a while, I saw guy, not she or her, because despite the legal name change he is a male. It has to take a extreme amount of courage to make this transition. My only way of being non judgmental came recently when I began to realize how much pain and turmoil is part of the package of being human, if there was a choice to have a life less painful then I figured that no one would choose to have sexual identity issues. I assumed sexuality was a choice, perhaps that is reason for this guy to "come out" at such a late stage in life. We also often assume and relate sexuality, sexual identity sexual attraction for the much younger folks, I applaud his courage, I will be honest and admit, will take me a while and a little more understanding to finally she him as now a her.

Dan August 25, 2013 at 06:25 PM
Let me tell you people......I have taken it in the chops from the entire municipal branch, intelligence community and media for decades over nonsense. Some people pull shenanigans and others are transgender. Regardless, if people can be discreet when it is appropriate then kudos to them. Personally the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community have sneaked around and caused devastation for my family and I just can not see them working in some areas of employ. When we follow the economic dictums of Swedan and Finland and their cultures we will be on the road to macro stability. The Closet Liberaches in Washington and ridiculous Anthony Weiner and Spitzer are examples of what I am talking about. Save your families and nation a second go round and be discreet.....there is no cure for you....

Maybe he/she was born with both parts? I read an article about a man that went in for an pre-surgical ultrasound and discovered that he had BOTH parts! Not their fault! He said that he never felt quite right but lived his life as a married man with biological children for many years. He decided to go with his female side with the blessing of his family. So why should anyone hate on them for something they had no decision about?
Rouzati Rugs, Inc. August 26, 2013 at 08:07 AM
I belive we should learn to respect other's privacy regarding personal decisions. The media should effort more to inform its followers by more important issues in our neighborhood than peoples private matters. I respect his personal decision of name changing, however I ask myself what decision did I have to come to this world and how I was named. Of course my parents had decided and they found this name which they like to name me after and I respect that. There is a old eastern saying and I am not sure if its from Rumi, that , " A donkey is a donkey no matter if you change its saddle". We are all human regardless of gender, race, color or ect. There are people in our town that have served our society in many different ways, and helping our tough encomy by creating new projects and new jobs and should respect and show gratitude.
Bubbawubba Gump August 26, 2013 at 11:25 AM
just because you are rich doesn't mean you can't be crazy. if you think you weren't meant to have a leg and want to chop it off that is called Body dysmorphic disorder, a mental illness. If you want to do it to your penis it is called "transgender", also a mental illness but one that is embraced by quacks and butchers around the country.
Resident August 28, 2013 at 03:20 AM
@Dan C. - "It" is probably the most offensive term you could call somebody who is transgendered. Have some respect. @John - Colonel Pritzker would dress as a man on occasion to keep up appearances, as is the case with the photo attached to this article. There are many people with whom she associated with that were not aware of her transgendered status, and dressing as a man made meetings with these people do smoother. Not all people (as shown by a majority of these awful comments) are comfortable with the transgender community. @Amy Valcenia - so if a woman isn't pretty, by your standards, she's not really a woman? You're ridiculous @Audrey De Jesus - you want to go back to the 50s and 60s where African Americans weren't allowed to drink from the same water fountains as Caucasians? Wow. @Dan - the ENTIRE gay, lesbian, bisexual, and trans community caused devastation to you family? I guess that would give you the right to dislike ALL of them, because you know, they're all the same.
Dan August 28, 2013 at 04:05 AM
Get with program, resident. The gay , transgender, bisexual and lesbian community have played on the world's anxities for thousands of years. I look for patterns and then decide. When one considers the subculture .... The deviations, perversions, trickery and other it plays on anxieties. My situation is complicated except to tell you the four orientations mentioned have wreaked huge suffering on my family and within my family, tax payors of Illinois and myself. It was better when restrictions were in place ie: the military, Christian Right, forbidden e of gay marriage and other. It is interesting when these restrictions were lifted how society in America has deteriorated politically, economically, socially and as a culture. I say be discreet and that is all. For myself and dealings with that subculture I say the gay , lesbian, bisexual and transgender community can go to,he'll. they have caused detestation sneaking around and causing on me murder of my brother, attempts on me, sexual assaults, extortion, reckless endangerment, intelligence agencies following me by database, voyeurism....do they really think I will turn a blind eye and see it their way? Get with it......they are not exceedingly smart..they are whores. Have you forgotten about aids in the eighties? Deviants? Bizarre behaviors? The culture is bad news so if people want to dress in drag, do the things they do just be discreet. This country needs a strong injection/ dosage of socialism in its government and the Liberaches ... Closet Liberaches in government will hear nothing of it. Get with it, man. As for Jenny, well I have interracted with him on several occasions many many years ago and he has had a tough road to travel. You wake up each day knowing half the world is in poverty, you enlist and experience Vietnam in the form of middle eastern atrocities, your family is worth billions and this culture hates you, others worship you, and if you want to make a friend in manyot the places he and I have travelled, buy a dog. This person is a hell of a survivor and if he feels compelled to be female, though I question this, fine. We have differences that encouraged me to part ways with him several years ago. It did not involve him but his family. It's done. He displayed bravery and could have gotten killed serving his country or now her country...and I doubt anyone asked his biography when the f-16's were scrambled to save he and her peers. Look for patterns of behavor, try not to stereotype and live.

If beautiful historic buildings can be kept up and used, full of life, I would strongly prefer that to any option. If choosing between owners who would keep it maintained, I prefer a private live-in resident over a bed and breakfast; however, a bed and breakfast is a great option if the former isn't available. I cannot picture this specific site, but high rise condo buildings block the lake views from all but those living there. They also typically add tall fences that block even more lake views. Please put aside for a minute personal objections to this person's gender identity and persuasion tactics to look only at how the bed and breakfast would compare to other end results.
