Evanston Patch: Tell us about your new business, http://tiexchange.com/.

Brooke Saucier: If someone is wearing the same 10 ties, their coworkers and friends will start to recognize those ties ... so I started a tie exchange so someone can send in their ties, we'll offer to give them credits for the ties they send in, and we can give them a new tie often. It's a membership system and with a subscription they will receive a tie, they can wear it as many times as they want, and they can send it back.

Evanston Patch: Where's the business located?

Saucier: Our office is in CoLab Evanston, that's where my desk is, and where we ship out of. We're an online entity. The site went live today [Tuesday]. ... We have the subscriptions, and we'll have some ads on the site, and when someone really likes a tie they can purchase it. Eventually we'll sell cuff links and pocket squares and other things.

Evanston Patch: Have you thought of offering any items for women?

Saucier: There's already a company that does it for purses, so there's already stuff out there for women. Purses, necklaces, bracelets, I think even shoes. I'm not starting early in the trend of reusable clothing and accessories. But a couple of women have told me they like to wear ties, so who knows.

Evanston Patch: How many ties will you start with?

Saucier: I'm starting with 140 ties. ... I'm giving up 100 of my personal ties for this. There will be ties on the tie exchange that were part of the tie blog. Some of them are hard to give up, but I know if I'm only going to wear them once, I need to set them free.

Evanston Patch: What's one thing people should know about ties?

Saucier: The tie is what makes you look different. You can wear the same blue shirt with a different tie, it'll look different. New ties give you a chance to change your look.
