Hoosier Mama Pie, Dollop Coffee Coming Soon to Evanston

The latest new businesses in Evanston include an outpost of the Chicago-based pie shop, an artisan bakery on Dempster and a children's resale shop at Evanston Plaza.

Several of the newest businesses in Evanston cater to a caffeine or baked good addiction. 

But never fear--two new exercises studios are also opening up their doors, for those who want to work off a slice of Hoosier Mama Pie.

Hoosier Mama Pie, Dollop Coffee Coming Soon
City council members approved a special use permit Monday for an Evanston outpost of the Chicago-based Dollop Coffee Co. and Hoosier Mama Pie Co. The coffee shop and bakery will open a restaurant in a shared space on the ground floor of a new, five-story mixed-use apartment and retail building going up at 749 Chicago Ave. The 20-seat café and pie shop will serve breakfast through dinner, with a menu that includes coffees, dessert and savory pies, other pastries, cheese plates, and possibly beer and wine, according to city documents.

Kafein Reopens Under New Ownership
Longtime Evanston coffee shop Kafein has reopened under new ownership after it was closed temporarily for electrical work. The café looks the same as it always did inside, right down to the Trivial Pursuit cards on every table.

Farmhouse to Open July 1
The Michelin-rated Chicago restaurant is expected to open its second location in Evanston on July 1, general manager Aaron Steingold told the Daily Northwestern. Hewn Bakery Now Open On Dempster
Hewn: Hand Forged Artisan Bread, the newest addition to the neighborhood, was welcomed to Evanston with a ribbon-cutting ceremony earlier this June. The bakery at 810 Dempster St. specializes in handmade bread, pastries, salads and sandwiches. All salads and sandwiches are grain-based, with no meat.

Children’s Resale Shop Planned For Evanston Plaza
Kristen White hopes to open a children’s resale store called Kazoom at 1940 Dempster St. in the Evanston Plaza shopping center. “We will sell like-new essentials that lower the cost of raising a child,” White told city council members Monday. She said the store would buy and resell clothing for children from birth through age 8, as well as infant gear and toys.

Few Spirits Expanding On Main Street
The local distillery has submitted an application for a special use permit to operate a wholesale outlet at 2310 Main St., near Sam’s Club and Marshall’s. According to city documents, the distillery needs more room for storage and bottling beyond its current location at 918 Chicago Ave.

Boxing, Crossfit Studio Now Open On Maple
Box Evanston opened recently at 739 Maple St. and is now signing up kids age 12 years and up for a summer youth camp. The studio also offers boxing, yoga and pilates classes for adults.

Barre Studio Coming to Church Street
Pure Barre is opening a franchise at 910 Church St. downtown. The national chain specializes in barre classes, where exercisers workout to music using small, isometric movements at a ballet barre. Pure Barre Evanston is set to open in early August, according to its Facebook page.
