Group Hopes to Lure Julius Meinl to Downtown Evanston

Downtown Evanston has started a Facebook page to help woo the coffee shop to the old Border's site on Maple Street.

Fans of Viennese coffee take note: There’s a movement afoot to bring a Julius Meinl coffee shop to Church Street Plaza.

Downtown Evanston, which is the marketing and business management services organization for downtown, is angling for the Viennese-style café to open at 1700 Maple Ave., the site of the former Borders Bookstore. There are three Julius Meinl coffee shops on Chicago’s north side.

The group has started a Facebook page, aptly named “Bring Julius Meinl To Downtown Evanston” to help its cause. The city's Economic Development Manager Nancy Radzevich said in a press release that she supports the effort.

As of Thursday evening, 132 people had liked the page, many of whom left comments praising the shop. “Best coffee i've ever had. Hands down,” wrote one fan.   Another offered a lesson in world history, saying that the company, which is based in Austria, offered intelligence help to the allies in WWII, adding: “and for that I say thank you and offer my wholehearted support of them bringing great coffee to Evanston!”
