New Bakery, Craft Brewery Coming to Evanston

A new bakery is set to open this spring on Dempster Street, while a craft brewery is planned for the city's west side. Read on for more business openings and closings.

Hewn Bakery Opening Soon On Dempster

Co-owners Julie Matthei and Ellen King are planning to open a takeout bakery called Hewn at 810 Dempster St. According to Matthei, they’re currently working on obtaining permits and renovating the retail space, and hope to open sometime in late spring or early summer.

Evanston architect and homebrewer Josh Gilbert is planning to open a brewery in west Evanston, where he’ll produce tallboys and kegs to sell to restaurants in the area. Eventually, Gilbert hopes to open a tap room on site where people can taste his beer and buy some food. He’s still working on finalizing a location but is hoping for a spring 2013 opening.

Forever Yogurt Moving In On Sherman

A Forever Yogurt shop is set to open soon at 1739 Sherman Ave. in downtown Evanston, according to the frozen yogurt chain’s website. The location formerly housed a Thai restaurant called Bento Box.

Michelin-Rated Farmhouse Opening in Evanston

Farmhouse, a farm-to-table-style restaurant in Chicago's River North neighborhood, is planning to open an Evanston branch of the restaurant in May, the restaurant announced on Twitter. The restaurant specializes in Midwestern food, beer and wine, and was recently included in the prestigious 2013 Michelin Guide Chicago, according to the restaurant's website. Crain’s reports that the restaurant will move in at 703 Church Street in May.

Lucky Platter Opening “Pop-Up” Restaurant Concept

Riffing off the popularity of underground dining and supper clubs, Lucky Platter owner Eric Singer is opening a “pop-up” restaurant called Company at 1307 Chicago Ave., which will house a rotating calendar of chefs in the 500 square-foot, 18-seat space. Singer is partnering with Craig Golden, principal of the real estate investment firm Blue Star Properties and owner of the building that houses Union Pizzeria and S.P.A.C.E., at 1245 Chicago Ave. 

Walgreens Opening At Former UBAA Tap Site

The Skokie Village Board recently approved six different measures that will allow Terraco Real Estate Development and Management to move forward with construction of a Walgreens at the former UBAA Tap site at 9956 Crawford Ave. The 14,490-square-foot store will sell beer, wine and liquor and will also have a drive-through lane for pharmacy pickups.

Former NoMi Sous Chef Coming To New Glencoe Restaurant

Christian Ragano, former sous chef at NoMi, will be executive chef at Guildhall, a new restaurant opening in a historic Prairie-style building in Glencoe, according to Crain’s. Alec Litowitz, the founder and CEO of Magnetar Capital, and Eric Fosse, founder and CEO of Homemade Pizza, both Glencoe residents, are launching the restaurant at 694 Vernon Ave., according to Crain's.
