New Gallery 'Pops Up' on Chicago Ave.

Joy Horwich and her daughters will keep the gallery open for just two weeks.

Chicago Avenue has a new art gallery — for the next 10 days.

Joy Horwich, who owned a Chicago gallery for three decades, opened a “pop-up” store at 1627 N. Chicago Ave. on Tuesday. It will stay open until Feb. 19.

Pop-up stores are short-term retail spots that often fill empty storefronts. They go in quick and stay briefly. In Horwich’s case, she and her two daughters put the gallery together after being approached by the store’s owner to see if they’d be interested.

“We popped up in just a couple weeks,” Horwich said. They’ve had previous pop-up galleries in Highland Park and Vernon Hills.

She contacted artists she has worked with for years, as well as some newcomers, who were thrilled for a place to showcase their works.

“It’s lovely to be able to have this venue for them,” said Horwich, who is running the gallery, “Judy Horwich Plus Two” with her daughters Jill Bernstein and Penny Keeshin. The gallery features paintings, photography, mixed-media pieces, ceramics, wood carvings and jewelry.

The women are hosting an artists’ reception tonight that’s open to the public from 7-9 p.m. For more information, call them at 847-881-6025.
