No Announcement Yet On Buyers for Evanston Dominick's

Evanston's two Dominick's stores close for good at noon on Saturday, Dec. 28.

The clock is ticking on Evanston's two Dominick's stores, which are set to close at noon December 28.

As the deadline nears, there's still no official word on a buyer for the stores at 2748 Green Bay Rd. and 1910 Dempster St., although Crain's Chicago Business reported that Whole Foods might be interested in purchasing the Green Bay Road store.

"While there has been a great deal of speculation about the next grocery operation at the Green Bay location, which was actively pursued by several grocery chains, there has been no formal announcement," Ald. Jane Grover (7th Ward) told residents in an e-mail. "Please stay tuned, and find your way to Dominick's to share your appreciation for the employees' continual kindness and service to us."

Grover is hosting a reception this Friday at the Green Bay Road Dominick's, in order to thank the employees whose jobs are on the line. Residents are invited to drop by between 2 and 5 p.m. (covering two shifts) to serve coffee and treats to Dominick's staff. All are welcome to bring baked goods or snacks.

In the next few weeks, stores are also selling everything but perishables at deep discounts, according to Grover.

The Dominick's at 1763 West Howard St. in Chicago, frequented by many Evanston residents, is also shutting its doors at noon on Dec. 28. An employee said there's no word yet on a buyer for that store, either.
