Shoppers Get Lei'd At Trader Joe's Grand Opening

"Don't be shy," called store employees, as they handed out leis to the new Evanston store's first customers Friday morning.

Trader Joe's staff cheered, clapped, and handed out leis to the first customers entering the new store at 1211 Chicago Ave. in Evanston.

The long-awaited Evanston store opened at 8 a.m. Friday, Sept. 6, with a ceremonial lei cutting by the mayor. Leis are a tradition for new Trader Joe's stores, according to store manager Ty James.

"It's really exciting, and we love being in the community," he said, as excited shoppers flooded the new store, decked out in pink, yellow, purple and blue leis.
