Trader Joe's is Coming to Evanston

The store will move into the old Blockbuster space at 1211 Chicago Ave.

Trader Joe's will open a 13,000-square-foot store in Evanston early next year, the company announced today.

This will be the first outpost of the popular grocery store in Evanston, and the 14th in the state. Judging by the comments on a recent story about , as well as the responses on Evanston Patch's Facebook page to the Trader Joe's announcement that are heavily laced with exclamation points, the news will be warmly received by residents.

City officials expressed their delight as well.

"I am thrilled that Trader Joe's has signed a lease and is scheduled to come to Evanston in the next year," Third Ward Alderman Melissa Wynne, whose district will house the new store, said in a press release.

Evanston Mayor Elizabeth Tisdahl pointed to the announcement as a sign that Evanston's economy is "definitely on an upswing," according to the press release.

Trader Joe's said the store is slated to open in the first quarter of 2013.

If you're already a Trader Joe's fan, what are you most excited to be able to buy at the new store? I'm addicted to their corn salsa, veggie pot stickers and various trail mixes.

I love their beers, pesto tortellini and baby heirloom tomato mix.
Tony wagner February 17, 2012 at 05:58 pm
Hope they have plenty of security, bad neighborhood
Beth Caldwell February 17, 2012 at 09:38 pm
Are you joking or being sarcastic? I live and work in this neighborhood and it's not a 'bad neighborhood.' What makes you say that? Stats?
tBook February 17, 2012 at 11:23 pm
Well, mr. wagner, perhaps on your way to Kenilworth you should avoid stopping there: thus avoiding the "local riffraff!" In the alternative, if you do reside nearby, I sincerely hope it is only a temporary layover--'till you can get back to wherever the "fine" neighborhood may be that you hailed from...

Tony, I've lived in the neighborhood for over 12 years, and knock wood, but we've never had a problem. We've raised our 3 kids here without incident, and I'm curious about what makes you say it's a bad neighborhood. I'd love to know specifics, as would the rest of us scratching our heads over your comment.

If I read the article right the other day, and the location of the new store is to be in Blockbuster on Chicago Ave, what crime are you speaking of? I have friends that own 4 businesses in that area and they have never had any problems all the 20+ years they have been there! It is a great location for TJ. Yes, I too would like to see those crime reports. You gotta back up what you are stating!

"Evanston police blotter " is on Yahoo almost every day. I do recall reading ovr the last month or so about liquor being taken from the Jewel. The crime in area wouldn't stop me from shopping though
Cindy Hogan-Jevon February 18, 2012 at 04:04 pm
to Tony and Fred, I must agree with everyone else as a resident of that "bad neighborhood" I suggest you check your facts before spout off nonsense
fred February 18, 2012 at 04:34 pm
Actually Cindy you should check yours.

RETAIL THEFT
Two bottles of Absolut Vodka and two bottles of Grey Goose vodka were stolen from the Jewel supermarket around 11:15 p.m. Sunday on 1100 block of Chicago Avenue
Cindy Hogan-Jevon February 18, 2012 at 06:45 pm
sadly that happens everywhere, doesn't make it a "bad neighborhood"
John Brinkmann February 22, 2012 at 07:00 pm
There's nothing at all dangerous with this neighborhood---that is unless someone boosting a few bottles of booze from Jewel scares you....On second thought though, we are talking about the same neighborhood where Christine doused herself in gasoline---(sorry Christine, couldn't help but try and add a little levity at your expense)
Christine Wolf February 23, 2012 at 12:29 am
No worries, John. I'm glad to say my gasoline dousing didn't do more harm than it did. And in case readers are wondering what we're talking about, here you go: http://evanston.patch.com/articles/what-a-gas

Hey Fred, check out the police blotter for Winnetka and other northshore communities. I'm afraid you'll find more heinous crimes than the one's you list here for Evanston. The theft you mention here is called "shrinkage" and is experienced by every retailer in every community.
