The U.S. Cellular Store at 1737 Sherman Ave. in downtown Evanston is expected to close within the next few weeks.

U.S. Cellular is closing its downtown Evanston store at 1737 Sherman Ave. within the next few weeks, according to the Daily Northwestern

The closure is part of the company's strategy to transfer its marketing efforts from urban hubs to more rural areas, a U.S. Cellular spokesperson told the Daily

In November, the Chicago-based company announced that it was exiting the Chicago and St. Louis markets and selling 585,000 customers in those areas to Sprint, or about 10 percent of its customer base, according to the U.S. Cellular website. A total of 171 stores will be affected by the transition, according to U.S. Cellular.
