What is the Best Chinese Restaurant in Evanston?

Vote for your pick in our weekly Readers' Choice series.

It can be argued that Chinese restaurants were some of the first eateries that challenged everyday Americans to begin sampling foreign, unfamiliar cuisines from places outside of Europe.

Today, it is easy to find a local restaurant serving food from India, Nepal, Japan, Thailand, Taiwan, the Middle East and Ethiopia, but many of these establishments would likely never have been able to flourish had Americans not first opened their minds and palates to Chinese fare.

So for this week’s Readers’ Choice, we’re asking locals the question: what is the best Chinese restaurant in Evanston?

Get top Evanston headlines delivered to your inbox each morning by signing up for our free newsletter

Vote in the poll below, and then let people know why you prefer a given restaurant by leaving a review in our business directory. By sharing your knowledge of Evanston businesses, future readers will benefit from your wisdom when seeking advice on where to find the best local grub.

Here are this week’s nominees:

635 Chicago Ave.
3339 Golf Rd.
521 Davis St.
624 Davis St.
2426 Main St.
819 Noyes St.
1033 Davis St.
Phoenix Inn 608 Davis St.
2485 Howard St.

Distinguishing Chinese restaurants from Pan-Asian eateries with Chinese influences can be difficult, so if we forgot to include any restaurants on the list, let us know in the comments section and we’ll add them to the list.

Winners will be decided by a combination of poll votes and reviews on their business irectory page. Polls close at 9 a.m. Friday, and we'll announce the winner later that day. Official rules are on the PDF above.

These contests are getting annoying. The votes are subjective and may result in long lines at one restaurant and empty storefronts everywhere else. Is this the best thing you can come up with to fill space in The Patch?

I think it's pretty useful, actually. I've been looking for a good Chinese restaurant in Evanston, and there are a handful on here I haven't tried yet. Thanks, Patch!

527 cafe, next to Joyyee, needs to be included onto the list!

Charlene I agree. one. I prefer checkplease for possible choices of resturants. Someone could respond to this pole a number of times.

Hi SW,
Thanks for writing. 527 cafe serves mainly Taiwanese food so I decided not to include it. Best, Jordan

Hi Charlene Bos and mij,
Thank you both for writing. I agree that votes alone don't tell the whole story, which is why Patch determines winners on both votes and reviews users leave in our business directory. We feel that this maintains a good balance between individual opinion and public consensus. One of the central reasons we host these online competitions is to remind people to share their opinions. Man residents have been living in Evanston so long that they know the city like the back of their hands, but others, like reader EvanstonDaily seems to want advice on what restaurant to try, and Patch would like to be a source that where can come to find that kind of information. Best, Jordan

I have lived in Evanston for more than 35 years but am currently working in Shanghai for a year. And, unfortunately, any Chinese restaurant in Evanston compared to "real" Chinese food in China is pathetic. We (in the U.S.) have so Westernized all of our cuisine so that it retains very little of its original authenticity. It is too bad that all Evanstonians cannot experience the real Chinese cuisine from all regions of China.
Jordan Graham April 17, 2012 at 01:24 am
Very true, rlbowser, that the food is different, but in a strange way, American-Chinese cuisine has taken on a life of its own. Plus, I hear many Chinese restaurants in America have "secret menus" -- or at least secret from people who don't have knowledge of more traditional Chinese cooking. I'd be interested to know whether any of the spots in Evanston have something like that. Thanks for writing!
