Wind-Powered Walgreens Takes Shape On Chicago

The new store at 635 Chicago Ave. will have wind turbines, solar panels and other features designed to produce the same amount of energy as the store consumes, if not more.

Construction is wrapping up on a new Walgreens store at 635 Chicago Ave. that will be powered by wind turbines, solar panels and other "green" features.

The new store will replace an existing Walgreens, and will include two wind-turbines, more than 800 roof-top solar panels and LED lighting. Builders will obtain geothermal energy by drilling 550 feet below ground, to tap into more constant temperatures that can be used to heat or cool the store during winter and summer.

The goal is to create a building that produces equal or greater energy than it uses, according to the company.
