Evanston Couple Gives Up Adoption Fight, Must Return South Korean Baby

Jinshil and Christopher Duquet have lost their bid to keep a 9-month old Korean girl whom they've raised since shortly after her birth.

 

An Evanston couple accused of circumventing South Korea’s adoption procedures have given up their fight to keep a 9-month-old Korean girl, whom they’ve raised since shortly after she was born, Chicago Tribune reported. 

The baby is scheduled to return to her native country Wednesday and will be placed with a South Korean family for adoption and not at an orphanage, Chicago Tribune reported.

Jinshil and Christopher Duquet say they could prolong the legal adoption battle with South Korea, but realized they couldn’t win, so it’s in baby Sewah Kim’s best interest to give her up now, Chicago.CBSLocal.com reported.

The Duquets used a private lawyer and not a licensed Korean adoption agency for Kim’s adoption but when they arrived in the U.S., they discovered her documents were invalid, Chicago.CBSLocal.com reported.

All sides agree that the Korean birth mother approves of the adoption, but the South Korean government says the girl should have had the opportunity to be adopted in Korea firstThe Christian Science Monitor reported.
