When moving back to Evanston several years ago, Erin Marcus wanted a chance to spend time with dogs without having own one. Marcus found a happy medium volunteering with C.A.R.E. at the Evanston Animal Shelter.
At the time Marcus owned an insurance brokerage company that required extensive traveling—getting a dog was not a possibility. In turn, giving up her Monday nights to help orphaned dogs find homes seemed like a good way to get in some dog time. Over the years, Marcus' roles with C.A.R.E. have grown.

"I am the Monday night Kennel Captain. I'm also an assistant in the ATV class, which is advanced training volunteer, where we teach our volunteers how to train dogs. I also am on our board and I do our PR and our advertising," Marcus said.

The Evanston Animal Shelter is a relatively small shelter, housing roughly 15 dogs, as well as anywhere from two to three times as many cats.
For Marcus, there's a strong sense of community within the small shelter, amongst volunteers, as well as the animals.
"I don't think I could volunteer at a big facility where you just have rows and rows of dogs that you never seem to get a leg up on."
