Proposed Safety Ordinance Would Expand Police Power Near ETHS

School and city officials recently discussed creating a safe school zone around Evanston Township High School.

Evanston police could have more authority around Evanston Township High School if school and city officials move forward with a proposed safety ordinance that would allow police to step in before a situation escalates to violence, the Daily Northwestern reported.

Under Illinois law, municipalities can create “safe school zones” near school areas, in which police can arrest individuals deemed a threat who refused to leave the zone after police request. The city and Evanston Township High School would work to determine the zone boundaries and District 202 Superintendent Eric Witherspoon says the proposed ordinance would target what he says are the two biggest threats to student safety: gang members and drug dealers, the Daily Northwestern reported.
