UPDATED: Rotary Building Evacuated after Gas Leak

The evacuation occurred at around 11 a.m. Friday.

The city reported that the gas leak has been capped. Fire crews will start opening up businesses around area as reading report clear.

The city said that all businesses on the east side of Sherman Ave. between Grove and Davis Streets have been evacuated near the high pressure gas line leak at 1560 Sherman Ave. (Rotary Building). Some businesses on Sherman Ave. south of Grove St. have also been evacuated.

When the leak is contained by Nicor, Evanston Fire personnel will enter business with monitoring equipment to determine when reentry is possible.

The Rotary building at 1560 Sherman Ave. has been evacuated following a gas leak, and businesses inside the building will remain closed Friday.

Construction crews hit a high pressure gas line in front of the building, according to an email from Evanston Community Information Coordinator Eric Palmer.

"The intersections of Grove St. and Sherman Ave. and Davis St. and Sherman Ave. are closed while Nicor crews work to stop and cap the gas leak," the letter read. "Nicor and Evanston Fire and Life Safety Service crews are working to determine if any other business north of Grove St. are affected."
