Storms Leave Flooded Streets, Power Outages in Evanston

Residents woke up Thursday to flooded streets and basements as well as some power outages after heavy rain and thunderstorms overnight.

After heavy rain and thunderstorms doused Evanston overnight, residents woke up Thursday to flooded basements and power outages around the city.

Nearly four inches of rain fell on the city between midnight and 8 a.m. Thursday, according to an e-mail bulletin sent to residents.

"In some cases, this has resulted in sewage backing-up into basements," the bulletin said. "In other locations, such as on areas along Central Street, the pressure of the water in the sewers has dislodged manhole covers and resulted in water flowing onto the street."

There were no major incidents of flooding in the streets early Thursday morning, but utilities field crews were dispatched to deal with multiple flooded basements, according to city manager Wally Bobkiewicz. As of 9:30 a.m., the utilities department had received 50 calls about flooded basements and 45 calls about flooded streets or alleys.

Residents reported localized flooding in several areas on the west side of the city, including Saint Louis between Main and Dempster and Keeney between Dodge and Gray. (Share where you're seeing flooding here>>).
