ETHS Rankings, Evanston Real Estate Secrets Among Most-Read Stories

Take a look back at the stories with the highest traffic during the month of April 2013, and catch up on the big news you may have missed in Evanston.

1. ETHS District 202 School Board Results

Evanston Township High School District 202 school board candidates Bill Geiger, Gretchen Livingston, Doug Holt and Patricia Savage-Williams had the greatest number of votes.

Despite the fact that every spot on the city council, as well as the mayor's seat, is up for election in 2013, there were just a few contested races in Evanston. 

3. ETHS Ranked 14th Toughest School in Illinois

According to annual rankings created by theWashington Post, Evanston Township High School is among the most challenging public high schools in the country. In Illinois, it ranks No. 14, after high schools in Arlington Heights, Buffalo Grove, Hinsdale, Glen Ellyn and Libertyville, among other communities. Four of the top schools are magnet schools in the city of Chicago.

4. UPDATE: Retired City Worker Died After House Fire on Hartrey

Fred Davis, 65, died after a fire broke out at his home at 1937 Hartrey Ave. in Evanston in late April. Davis was a retired city sanitation worker, according to neighbor Kelly Young. He also volunteered for years delivering food from the pantry at nearby Friendship Baptist Church to several food pantries in the area, Young said. 

5. Evanston Resident Charged with DUI in Pedestrian's Death

Following the death of Skokie resident Alan Rubin, police charged Evanston resident Larissa Lomax, 32, with driving under the influence of drugs and failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.

A storm that dumped more than four inches of rain on Evanston in mid April caused 80 backed-up basements and flooded at least 50 streets and alleys. City officials say a significant number of the backed-up basements were caused by the sewer system trying to convey more water than its capacity allows.

Township High School Supt. Eric Witherspoon shared a note on the District 202 website following the death of in late March. Other ETHS students were also injured in the crash on Howard Street.

9. Central Street Cafe Closes; Business For Sale

Evanston’s Central Street Cafe closed its doors for good in March, and the business is up for sale, according to Mitchell Dulin, the former owner and leaseholder of the property.

Patch followed the city council race closely as Ald. Judy Fiske (1st Ward), Ald. Delores Holmes (5th Ward) and Ald. Mark Tendam (6th Ward) were reelected to the city council.
