Who & What Determines If a Restaurant is Good or Bad?

There are tons of people who are self-proclaimed food critics and have lots of things to say about what is good or vad. But what is it that makes something good? If something is truly “good” will everyone, no matter what class, race, or culture think its good? There have been many of times that I’ve read rave reviews by famous food critics talking about an amazing meal but when I actually tried it, it was very disappointing. I don’t know if its because I had high expectations and expected something amazing and out of this world but this has happen to me over and over again.

I recently went to a local restaurant that received great reviews and when I tried it out it was very disappointing. The food was underwhelming and overpriced. The only thing amazing about the restaurant that made up for its lack luster and tasteless food was the atmosphere.  So I asked my friends with whom I was dining with, their thoughts on the meal, which sparked a conversation about what makes a restaurant good? One of my fellow diners responded saying that if something is good it is good period. I thought that this was an interesting answer and I thought more about it. Are there meals out there that are unanimously good? What really attracts people to a restaurant? Is it the good food or is it because these posh well known food critics put their stamp of approval on it and determine that it is good? Who are these people? And why do their opinions matter? In that same respect why does my opinion matter? What I think is good may be different from what you thinks is good, for some people any food is good as long as it fills then up, other people its good as long as it has lots of salt, sauce or etc.

In my opinion I think the answer to the question is more complex and has multiple answers. I think that there are some meals that are hands down no denying it just flat out good no matter what. I also think that some things are good based on your background and what your palette has been exposed to. I also think that there are some down right nasty things out their that these big shot food critics say is awesome and it is soo not. I feel that some restaurants get recognition not because their food is good but because they just have amazing pr and marketing and because of this people want to try it.

The restaurants that can afford great PR and Marketing often outshine the smaller mom  n pop restaurants, that don’t have the resources to market themselves. I also believe that sometimes these local mom n pop eateries can often have some of the best food bur because of lack of marketing not as many people know about them. So I think that the next time I try a new restaurant I will be weary of the reviews that I read because one man’s definition of good could be way different than my definition of good.
