AKA Entrusts Chapter Archives to Shorefront Legacy Center

On Thursday, January 20, 2014, Shorefront Legacy Center and the Evanston/North Shore alumnae chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. will host an event marking both the culmination of the chapter's 65th anniversary year and the one of the first donations to Shorefront's archives since its relocation to a new facility located in the basement of the historic Sherman United Methodist Church.

The public is invited to join in the celebration , taking place from 6:30PM to 8:00PM at the church, 2214 Ridge Avenue, Evanston, IL.

Among the items being donated to Shorefront for safekeeping, cataloguing and research are the chapter's recently published history book, photographs, an oral history video, news clippings and other significant memorabilia.

Founded at Howard University in 1908, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. is now a global organization, as well as the nation's first historically African-American, Greek letter organization founded by and for college-educated Black women. The local alumnae chapter (Delta Chi Omega) was founded in June of 1948 in Evanston, IL.  In 1999, Delta Chi Omega chapter established the non-profit Ivy Pearl Foundation, Incorporated, which annually awards numerous scholarships and grants to local students and service organizations.  To learn more about Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Delta Chi Omega Chapter, visit www.akaevanston.org.
