CATHOLIC CHARITIES OF THE ARCHDIOCESE OF CHICAGO HOSTS THIRD ANNUAL “VETERANS IN NEED” DINNER

G. Mullen to Keynote Dinner to Help Local Veterans



Since its founding in 1917, Catholic Charities of Chicago has
always made the needs of veterans a top priority. With the increase of American
soldiers, sailors and airmen returning to the United States, Catholic Charities
of the Archdiocese of Chicago continues to see a high demand in its services to
support veterans.

Catholic Charities is
hosting its third annual “Veterans in Need” dinner on Friday, May 9 at
the Union League Club to raise funds for its Veterans services. Hosted by Rob
Johnson of CBS 2 Chicago, the reception for the event begins at 5:30 p.m.
followed by dinner at 7 p.m. The event is expected to raise more than $120,000.
Former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff
and Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Michael G. Mullen
is the keynote speaker. 




Entertainment during dinner includes the Ken Arlen
Jazz Quartess
, as well as a presentation of Colors by the Color Guard
from the Lincoln Park High School Junior ROTC Cadets. There also will be
a raffle with prizes that include once in a lifetime trips to Washington,
D.C. with a private tour of the Pentagon
and a VIP guided tour of the Abraham
Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum. Proceeds of this
important dinner for Catholic Charities support its Veterans programs which aid
veterans with housing, substance abuse recovering and job placement throughout
Cook and Lake Counties.



“It will be an honor
to have Admiral Mullen speak at this very
important event to assist veterans in need. Admiral Mullen knows firsthand how we must help our Veterans through
these very challenging times,” said Monsignor Michael M. Boland, President, Catholic
Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago.

Admiral Mullen was sworn in as the 17th Chairman of the
Joint Chiefs of Staff on October 1, 2007. Until his retirement, he served as
the principal military advisor to the president, the Secretary of Defense, the
National Security Council and the Homeland Security Council. Throughout his
career, he commanded three ships, served as a flag officer and served in
leadership positions at the Naval Academy, in the Navy's Bureau of Personnel,
in the Office of the Secretary of Defense and on the Navy Staff. He was the
32nd Vice Chief of Naval Operations from August 2003 to October 2004. His last
operational assignment was as commander, NATO Joint Force Command Naples/Commander,
U.S. Naval Forces Europe. Mullen retired in 2011.
