Global Developments: The Past in the Present
At NSSC, Northfield Location:
Arthur Cyr, Ph.D., Director, Clausen Center for World Business, Carthage College
This course will place current and recent developments in international relations in historical context. There is a tendency, especially among Americans, to regard current developments as contemporary only. However, to a remarkable degree, long-term trends define and guide what happens in our contemporary world. This is true in the fields of defense and national security, the global economy, and international law. What has changed dramatically is the physical condition of human life, not the outlooks and perspectives of human existence. Technology is a principal driving force of change; ethics and morality provide fundamental continuities. Philosophy and religion will be integrated with the concepts of economics, history, and political science in this three-week course. No class November 29.
