Juneteenth Jubilee

(Evanston)-
The Forrest E. Powell Foundation will

The festivities will include a delicious BBQ lunch, followed by a private
performance of the popular play, “Having Our Say: The Delaney Sisters’ First
100 Years.” The event will be held at the Fleetwood-Jourdain Theater, 927 Noyes
Street, Evanston. The picnic begins at 1pm; the play starts at 3 pm.

 Registration for the full event
is $50.00,
which
includes food, beverage, live music and admission to the play.  All proceeds will benefit the Forrest E.
Powell Foundation, a non-profit organization that helps train and educate North
Shore youth through scholarships and grants.

“Juneteenth” is the oldest national commemoration of the ending of slavery in the
United States. It celebrates African American freedom and emphasizes education
and achievement. Its festivities typically feature picnics and friends/family
gatherings and is considered a time for reflection and rejoicing.  The
growing popularity of “Juneteenth” involves all races, nationalities, and
religions joining hands to acknowledge a period in our history that shaped and
continues to influence our society today – all are welcome and encouraged to
celebrate together!

 Founder
of the Forrest E. Powell Foundation, Hecky Powell notes, “This is one more
thing to love about our unique Evanston community – it’s the start of a
Juneteenth tradition!  We can all come
together to celebrate freedom, kick off summer, and enjoy a fantastic play.”

 Tim Rhoze,
Artistic Director of Fleetwood-Jourdain Theatre adds, “The Delaney sisters, and
the play based on their incredible lives, are inspirational.  It’s a simple story about the struggles of
two women, daughters of former slaves, who both lived to be more than 100 years
old. Their lives were marked by many great social and professional
accomplishments. The story typifies the essential human condition – of struggle
and achievement. It is a universally appealing message about our country and
its indomitable human spirit.”
