One Summer, America, 1927

At NSSC, Northfield Location:

Jim Kenney, Executive Director, Common Ground

What happened that summer?  Well, what didn't?  Bill Bryson, one of America's great storytellers, gives us a word picture of a prosperous American season that celebrated daring aviators (especially Charles Lindbergh), baseball heroes (Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig), Showboat, The Jazz Singer, flagpole sitters, and flappers. The same summer witnessed the brief, bloody ascendancy of Al Capone, brutal murders, the controversial trial and execution of Sacco and Vanzetti, and the fiscal missteps that set the stage for the depression that was just over the horizon. There's more, lots more; and we'll sample most of it, occasionally pausing to listen to Bryson himself as he reads from his wonderful book.
