Spirituality on Film: Black Narcissus (first in a series)

At NSSC, Northfield Location:

Columbia College

Film can
provide a medium of contemplation and conversation and can provide a pathway
for wisdom, for transformation, for grace and redemption, and a window into the
human condition in the presence, or absence, of God.  Each month watch some of the most visionary
and inspirational films ever made and, along with a lecture and discussion,
explore how filmmakers inspire audiences to ask big questions about our purpose
and existence; expand our understanding as to the possibilities of God and an
afterlife; showcase challenging stories of love and compassion; and stir our
hearts and minds.

Black Narcissus - Directed by Michael Powell & Emeric Pressburger, 1947,
UK, 100 min.

One of the most ambitious, imaginative, and spectacular
films ever made about the issues of God and spirit. This beautifully
photographed movie tells an unusual tale of Anglican nuns who establish a
convent in a remote region of the Himalayas. A young nun is chosen to be Sister
Superior and assigned a daunting task: to convert a sultan's palace into a
convent, transforming it from a residence for concubines to a school and
hospital. The task proves challenging, and problems are compounded by ensuing
health issues and a decline in morale overall. Slowly each sister reacts
violently and dramatically to their growing inner turmoil, and soon their lives
collide in an explosive climax that leads to tragic consequences.
