University Guild Program: Opening the Vaults - Wonders of the Columbian Exposition

Paola Bucciol, Exhibition Project Manager.

Not only the birthplace of the Juicy Fruit chewing gum and the Ferris
Wheel, the World’s Fair also marked the triumphant debut of our very own Field
Museum. Now, 120 years later, the Museum is opening its hidden collections to
display incredible artifacts and specimens that will bring to life one of the
most spectacular events in the Windy City’s history in Opening the Vaults:
Wonders of the 1893 World’s Fair. Come hear from Ms. Bucciol about objects
that have rarely—or never—been on display since they amazed fairgoers over a
hundred years ago, including a meteorite so feared it was kept chained in a
dungeon. Explore how the fair brought visitors closer than ever to unique
wonders like exotic animals, international cultures, and strange new products
from all over the world. And see how Field Museum scientists continue to conduct
ground-breaking research on the ever-growing collection using new technology.

Paola Bucciol is the Exhibition Project Manager for Opening
the Vaults: Wonders of the 1893 World's Fair. Paola joined The Field
Museum's Exhibitions department in September 2008 and worked as Exhibition
Developer on several projects. In her role as Project Manager, she works
with the exhibition's team and colleagues throughout the Museum to create and
bring this unique exhibition to the
public. Given her background in
archeology and history, she loved to learn more about the Great Fair, the
Field's collections, and Chicago's history--all in one project!

University Guild Program:   The November 4th program on
Monday, at 1:30 pm, in Scott Hall, University Guild Lounge, will now be Claude
Monet:  Evolution of a Gardener with Tish
Robinson, Owner of The Wonders of
France.  Monet captured the newly
popular 19th century leisure pursuits of gardening and horticulture in iconic
images. His many gardening influences will be explored - including his family's
luxurious gardens on the Normandy coast, and his private gardens in the
legendary riverside towns of Argenteuil and Vetheuil. The artist's greatest
masterpiece, the unforgettable gardens at Giverny, will complete our study of
Monet's evolution as a gardener. 

The University Guild’s Annual Membership is
$50.  Membership is open to all in the community.  Guests are welcome and cost is $2.00 per
program.   The purpose of the
University Guild is to bring to the membership of the Guild the intellectual
resources of the University, to promote the interests of the University, to
work for the collection and exhibition of the objects of art, and to advance
the development and appreciation of the fine arts in the University and in
Evanston.  The University Guild also gives scholarships to students at
Northwestern University.
