University Guild Program: Verdi - His Music & Politics

The University Guild invites you to attend our first program for this season
with Dr. Michael Dreyer, one of our favorite speakers.  He will
be talking about Verdi:  His Music & Politics on Monday,
October 7th, at 1:30 pm in the University Guild Lounge in Scott
Hall.

Giuseppe
Verdi (Oct. 9/10 1813-1901) – Music, Politics, and the Unification of Italy

This year is the Bicentennial of the birth of two giants of 19th century
opera, namely Richard Wagner (5/22/1813-1883) and Verdi. Both composers
revolutionized opera, even if the elements of their revolutions were quite
different. Wagner has been known also for his deep interest in politics, but it
was Verdi who was actually elected into his countries parliament, crowning a
lifelong interest in political events. The ardent patriot Verdi incorporated
political themes into many of his early operas (e.g. Nabucco, I Lombardi,
Battaglia di Legnano), and later on his name supposedly was used as an acronym
for “Vittorio Emanuele, Re D’Italia”, thus giving a seemingly innocent voice to
the desire for political unification in Italy. We will explore this connection
between music and politics, untangling a web of fact and fiction.
