Vegetables Flourishing at The Talking Farm

It was 88º F. inside the small hoophouse at the Talking Farm on May 15 when outside the temperature was a chilly 47º. Filling the raised beds were healthy-looking vegetables being readied for sale to restaurants or distributed to other venues. The varieties were often unusual: Black Krim tomatoes, Toscano kale, Bloody Butcher (heirloom)  tomatoes, Red Russian kale, as well as sage, dill, and other herbs.

Linda Kruhmin, farm operations manager, was excited about the progress TTF has made. Outside some meters away a large hoophouse 20' wide, 12' high, and 72' long was being erected. "We can extend the growing season into January with this," she said. "And you can put hoop houses inside hoop houses for growth even during winter months and without electricity."

On Feb. 18 the Talking Farm, a 501(c)3 organization, received permission from Skokie to sell and distribute produce. The 2+ acre farm is located at 3701 Howard St., 1/2 mile west of McCormick Blvd.

You are invited to volunteer at Work Days on the farm and to their seedling sales on Saturdays. Here's the link:http://www.thetalkingfarm.org/calendar/
This is an amazing time to see and join in their growth.
