What NOT to Put In A Compost Pile
Pictured is a compost pile on the edge the Peter Jans Golf Course. The sign reads "No Dog Poop." (note the stray golf ball below the compost screen). This raises the question: What shouldn't you put in your compost? Here's a list:
>Human or animal feces, incl. kitty litter--health risk
>Meat, bones, blood, fish, bacon grease, animal fats--attract critters
>Used personal products like paper diapers, tampons, kleenex
>Sawdust: you must know that the source is not diseased wood
>Ash from burning treated wood, commercial fire-logs, painted wood--toxins
>Raw rice or cooked rice: bacteria hub--attracts critters
>Diseased plants: carry viruses, bacteria, fungi--may not be killed by compost heat
>Colored paper, dyed hair--toxins
>Peanut butter, mayonnaise, greasy food--attract critters
>Bread, cakes, pasta, rolls--pests love them!
>Aggressive weeds: greens only, no seeds
Composting is great--enjoy--
