Evanston Celebrates Bike to Work Week

Bike to Work Week runs from Saturday, June 8, to Friday, June 14.

Bike to Work Week began Saturday, June 8, and runs through Friday, June 14, around the Chicago area.

“Bike to Work Week is a great reminder that biking instead of driving is good for our health, our economy and the environment," City of Evanston Sustainable Programs Coordinator Catherine Hurley said in a press release. "Air pollution, global climate change, traffic congestion and economic dependence on fossil fuels are all reduced by bike riding. Bicycling is a personal way one can help stop global climate change. Every time an Evanston resident uses a bike to commute to work, they avoid putting needless pounds of CO2 emissions into the environment from their vehicle.”

Active Transportation Alliance is hosting a challenge for bike commuters, encouraging them to bike all the way to or from work during the week. On Friday, June 14, bikers can join a pit stop organized by the Active Transportation Alliance at Church St. and Maple Ave. from 6:30 to 8 a.m. to pick up a goodie bag, Evanston bicycle map and learn more about biking in Evanston.

Northwestern University is also offering a pit stop for bikers from 3 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, June 12, at the Jacobs Center. Bikers can get a free safety check or lube and air from a mechanic.
